The effects of sedation typically wear off by the end of your visit; however, it’s still strongly recommended that you arrange a ride home afterward.
In some cases, oral sedation may be combined with nitrous oxide, as described above. You will be continuously monitored throughout the procedure.
Because the effects of oral sedation can last for some time afterward, you will need to arrange for somebody to accompany you to and from the office.
For procedures such as extractions and impacted wisdom tooth removal, our oral surgeons may use intravenous sedation, administered through a small IV line.
We commonly use Versed (midazolam), often in combination with nitrous oxide. This approach allows for a lower dose of IV medication while still achieving effective sedation, which we consider a safety advantage.
You will be continuously monitored throughout the procedure. The effects of IV sedation can last for several hours after your visit, sometimes up to 24 hours or slightly longer. For this reason, you must arrange for somebody to accompany you to your appointment and take you home after a monitored recovery period in the office.
It is also important that you do not eat or drink for at least six hours before your appointment.
